Walk Beside Me

Fear not, for I am with you;
be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Isaiah 41:10

By committing yourself as a servant leader in public safety and emergency services, the steps and the path you take are distinct from others.  Literally and metaphorically each of your step is now specific and definitive.  At the basic literal level, your step is no longer casual and ordinary like your past self.  As a disciplined and experienced warrior, you now walk with aspiration and deliberation.  Unlike the carefree walk of the ordinary people, your presence is now a deterrence to crime and violence wherever you go.  Your appearance is an insistence and persistence of peace.  You are a peacemaker.

When you walk, you don’t just walk.  You are trained to be decisive in all your steps which must be highly refined and defined in skills and judgment. How to walk, when to take that step, what to take, and where to go are tactically integrated into your identity.  When your partner takes a left during a room entry, you immediately know to hook to the right.  Based on your position, you know exactly your specific mission and obligation.  Whether you are leading in the front, following from behind, or running on the side, you have a solemn duty to discharge your critical actions with diligence.  Your life, the lives of your brothers and sisters, and the lives of the innocent depend on your chosen steps. Although each of those steps may be leading to your death, there cannot be any hesitancy in those steps because each of those steps may save the life of a friend and a stranger.  There is fear in every step; however, you trust God that there is a greater purpose in every step.  With the love for a fellow friend, fear was transformed from an obstacle to become a compass to help in the navigation of the narrow righteous path among dangers.  As the hands and feet of God, you are trained to engage against the greatest wrong and harm.

Similarly, my fellow peacemakers, I pray that every step you take may be in the path of Jesus Christ with righteousness, justice, and compassion. It is a path very different from ordinary people. As a committed Christian warrior, a peacemaker of God, your step is no longer casual and ordinary like your past self.  As a disciplined and experienced servant leader, may you now walk with aspiration and deliberation and devote yourself in the service of the good purposes of God.

So you will walk in the way of the good
and keep to the paths of the righteous.
