John Pi, MD, FBI Supervisory Special Agent – retired
Our Chief Medical Officer, Dr. John Pi, is a Diplomat of the American Board of Emergency Medicine and a retired FBI Supervisory Special Agent. With 30 years of specialized clinical experience and 20 years of law enforcement experience in investigations, operations, training, and policy oversight, he is capable of integrating and analyzing complex law enforcement operations with clinical medicine.
As an FBI Special Agent, Dr. Pi was qualified as an investigative agent, undercover agent, and tactical officer as well as a Medical Director for the FBI tactical medical program. He provided oversights to FBI SWAT, HAZMAT, Evidence Response Team, Dive Team, Rapid Deployment Team, Bomb Tech Program, WMD, and Render Safe National Assets missions. Additionally, he provided specialized training and policy administration for state, county, and local law enforcement agencies. He was certified as a General Police Instructor by the FBI and a course instructor by California POST.
Dr. Pi implemented comprehensive tactical medical training programs for federal, state, county, and local law enforcement agencies to specifically address their training needs and operational requirements. By integrating law enforcement tactics and advanced emergency medicine, Dr. Pi developed “best practices” to cover the “practical and applicable” critical skills including officer-down immediate action, WMD countermeasures, mass casualty management, hostage rescue, HAZMAT response, cross-barricade assessment, C2 consultation, and deployment medicine. He is also an expert in the Use-of-Force and published an authoritative position paper on law enforcement use of carotid restraint with title “Bilateral Vascular Restraint – Facts and Myths of the Carotid Restraint” which was published National Tactical Officer Association Tactical Edge journal in 2010. This position paper stated the facts and myths about carotid restraint (aka vascular neck restraint VNR, lateral neck restrain, and vascular choke) including its techniques, tactics, indications, pathophysiology, clinical effects, treatments, legal implications, and policy recommendations.
