Gentleness – Defined

Keep Calm and Serve and Protect

Despite the current public view of seeing police as the source of violence, police is perhaps the perfect definition of gentleness.

It is true that the police is made up of rough men and women capable of violence, yet police is disciplined in its actions, forceful and yet… safe. This is gentleness: an identity capable of force of violence yet safe.

An Youtube video showed an adult lion in the African wild. This lion was raised by a human and released into the Serengeti. The video showed this full grown adult lion meeting its human in the African plain. Despite its disproportional gigantic size, the lion was loving and playful with its human. Its weight and force were controlled. There was no danger between the lion and its human. This is gentleness: an identity capable of force of violence yet disciplined and safe.

Some of the recent videos of protests and riots showed unruly protestors and rioters throwing hatred-filled verbal and physical abuses inches away from the officers standing in a line. There had to be an inherent sense of safety by the abusive protestors and rioters knowing the police are disciplined and their forces are controlled. These videos showed that there were more fear toward individuals of opposing party than police. Again, this is gentleness: an identity capable of force of violence yet disciplined and safe.

It is true that the police is made up of rough men and women capable of violence, yet police is disciplined in its actions, forceful and yet… safe. Gentleness is not a reflection of weakness; instead, gentleness shines in the face of violence. Many of us do not understand nor appreciate until we were personally the victims of violent crimes. In these violent situations, the rough men and women of police force are a source of safety, comfort, and gentleness.
