“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,
through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.”
Galatians 6:14
In the first-century, the cross meant one thing and one thing only: the most painful and tortuous death by crucifixion. It was the ultimate form of punishment by death. Dying for all sinners by crucifixion, the cross is a glorious symbol of what our Lord Jesus Christ has done for us. The cross represents all that Jesus has sacrificed for us, all that He has won, and all the love He has for us. Through the cross, Christ gave us freely love, mercy, grace, forgiveness, freedom, and redemption. The cross I wear is a reminder of the gospel and all that Jesus has done for me.
Furthermore, Jesus said to his disciples, “Take up your cross and follow Me” in Matthew 16:24, Mark 8:34, and Luke 9:23. Jesus calls each and everyone of us to take up our own cross, our commitment, to follow Him. Jesus calls on us to commit our entire lives to Him, and this commitment includes sacrificing and putting death of our own plans and desires and devoting our lives to do His will. Your cross is unique to your journey, and no one else can carry your cross. The cross I wear is a reminder of my commitment to follow Jesus.
“If anyone would come after me,
let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
Matthew 16:24 ESV
